WE CAME TO REPORT!

The Climate Crisis threatens humanity’s survival, and wars are just the fuel for it.

The media reports daily on wars, promoting debate and analysis, but they fail to address their impact on climate change, a global problem that affects all populations.

Here I will try to demonstrate this impact.
Wars:

  • increase greenhouse gas emissions
  • destroy ecosystems and infrastructure
  • divert funds
  • divert attention and climate action
  • cause forced migration
  • exacerbate population vulnerability
  • consume significant natural resources.

    A report prepared by
    “Scientist for Global Responsibility
the Conflict and Environment Observatory” states that armed forces worldwide were responsible for 5.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions in 2022.

    The Numbers:

    Russia’s War in Ukraine:

The report, “Climate Damage Caused by Russia’s War in Ukraine,” established that the total damage caused by Russia during the two-year invasion reached $32 billion.

A study by the IGGAW Greenhouse Gas Accounting of War Assessment (GVGAW), states that 120 million tons of CO2 were emitted in the first 12 months of the conflict.

In the 24 months, this rose to 175 million tons, a figure that exceeds the annual emissions of a highly industrialized country.

The total environmental cost already exceeds $57 billion.

The research team states that most of the emissions come from a combination of explosions, forest fires, and damage to energy infrastructure.

According to a report by the International Rescue Committee (IRC), 29% of Ukrainian territory requires monitoring due to soil contamination and the presence of mines.

    Israel-Gaza Conflict

A study published in the journal “Social Science Research Network” states that projected emissions for the first 60 days of the war between Israel and Gaza were greater than the annual emissions of 20 countries.
In total, researchers estimate emissions during this period at
    281,000 tons of CO2.
If the military infrastructure built by Israel and Hamas is considered, total emissions increase to the equivalent of the annual emissions of 33 countries.
The reconstruction of Gaza will generate an additional 30 million tons of greenhouse gases.

Another study from Queen Mary University of London reports that between 420,265 and 652,552 tons of CO2 were emitted in the first 120 days of the conflict, levels higher than those of 26 countries within the global average annual emissions.

Let’s see what the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says. All sectors need to reduce emissions by 43% by 2030, matching 2019 levels, to keep the temperature increase to no more than 1.5°C compared to the pre-industrial era.

The numbers are alarming! We won’t meet this goal. We need to speak out!

On the other hand, climate change increases the risk of new violent armed conflicts (Nature magazine), as extreme weather events harm economies, reduce agricultural and livestock production, and intensify inequalities between social groups.
These factors can trigger conflicts and increase the risk of violence.

The only way out is an integrated approach, where peace policies include climate justice and where sustainability is seen not only as an environmental goal, but as a global security strategy. (Greenefact)

HUMANITY AT WAR WILL BE DEFEATED BY CLIMATE CHANGE!
