EARTH CLOSER TO CLIMATE CHAOS
“SCALING CLIMATE TURBULENCE”
Planet Earth experienced its hottest year on record in 2024, according to confirmation from researchers and the WMO.
The American Institute of Biological Sciences issued a statement saying: “The Planet is approaching climate chaos” after an international team of researchers, following an annual study, collected compelling evidence and revealed that the climate crisis is accelerating at an alarming rate.
EARTH’S VITAL SIGNS AT “RECORD LEVELS”
A study co-led by William Ripple of Oregon State University in the USA, and Christopher Wolf of the Terrestrial Ecosystems Research Associates (TERA), shows that 22 of the 34 “vital signs of the Planet” reached record levels.
Key indicators that were monitored include:
• Energy consumption
• Greenhouse gas emissions and concentrations
• Global temperatures
• Ice masses
• Ocean conditions
• Extreme weather patterns
The set of all indicators provides a comprehensive view of climate change and its causes.
Researchers confirm that 2024 was the hottest year on record and state that this is a sign they call:
“an escalation of climate turbulence.”
By near the end of 2025, atmospheric CO2 levels are at record highs due to the likely action of El Niño, which reduces CO2 absorption, and large areas of intense forest fires, tracing a dangerous trajectory in the intensification of the greenhouse effect.
The report highlights cascading risks, including “a potential disruption of the meridional circulation of the Atlantic Ocean, which could trigger abrupt and irreversible climate disturbances, including drastic changes in regional weather patterns, intensification of droughts, floods and reduced agricultural productivity in key regions.”
IMPACT MITIGATION
The climate report published in the scientific journal “Bioscience” states that global warming can still be mitigated with the right actions if there is boldness and speed in action.
Given that the cost of mitigating climate change is far less than the global climate damage that climate impacts can cause, mitigation should be a priority.
Since scientists are the best experts on the serious risks the planet faces and will face, they warn of the urgent need for mitigation strategies, which they say are available and economically viable.
THEY SAY:
“From forest protection, the use of renewable energies, plant-rich diets, reducing food loss and waste, to the restoration of degraded ecosystems, such as wetlands, peatlands and mangroves, these are actions that must be implemented urgently.
Even small changes can contribute to an essential path forward in the face of the impasse we find ourselves in.
The scientists conclude the report by emphasizing that:
• We are harming the most vulnerable and marginalized, who are the least responsible for the crisis.
• “The future is still being written” through policy choices, investments and collective action.
