The image illustrates the Gries Glacier in the Swiss Alps, known as the “dying glacier”.
Glaciers in the Alps are disappearing!
The Gries Glacier in Obergoms, Switzerland, lost 6 meters of ice vertically, between September 2024 and September 2025, according to Mattias Huss, Director of Glacier Monitoring in Switzerland.
This glacier is retreating alarmingly as climate change accelerates.
According to this expert, this is a “dying glacier.” Years of drought, coupled with very hot summers, are the primary causes of the phenomenon.
The years 2022, 2023, and 2025, with consecutive droughts, along with the particularly hot summer of 2025, contributed significantly to heavy glacier losses throughout Switzerland.
Sudden snowfalls, like those that occurred in April 2025, are not enough to reverse the situation, creating even more problems for populations due to unexpected snow avalanches.
The instability of the glaciers themselves is worrying, as was felt with the Birch Glacier in the village of Blatten, in the canton of Valais, which was destroyed in a catastrophic collapse; 90% of the houses were buried under 10 million m³ of ice, rock, and mud.
The WMO (World Meteorological Organization) indicates that this is a global trend, as the melting has been accelerating since 1990/2000.
For the third consecutive year, all regions of the Earth report ice loss.
The glaciers of Europe, Scandinavia, the Caucasus, Western Canada, South Asia, and New Zealand will continue to disappear.
CONSEQUENCES:
The melting of glaciers causes sea levels to rise, threatening coastal communities, altering global weather patterns, leading to extreme events, droughts and heat waves; it causes the loss of fresh water, river flow, energy production, destroys wildlife habitats, increases natural hazards and impacts marine life.
The consequences of climate change are everywhere and show no signs of letting up. COP30 did not confront the problem head-on and fell far short of what was necessary and required.
It is a fight for all of us, and our voices must be heard. For this, we need everyone who consciously knows that there is no alternative to Planet Earth, our only home.
